Artificial hackmanites with the composition of Na8(AlSiO4)6(Cl2-2xSx) were synthesized and it was found that the photochromic color density increased with increasing sulfur content x. Solid solutions Ba(Mg1-x/2Alx/2)(Si1-x/2Alx/2)O4, which are barium magnesium silicates BaMgSiO4 substituted by Al, were also synthesized and it was succeeded that the optical absorption wavelength was modified to be lowered with increasing aluminum content. Photochromic BaMgSiO4 is synthesized by using H3BO3 as a raw material, which has been explained to be flux. However, BaMgSiO4 synthesized without H3BO3 and subsequently H3BO3 added did not show photochromism.
