| 内容記述 | This article explores the influence of Nisei’s study tours of Japan on Japanese Americans in Seattle in the prewar period by focusing on the relationship between cross-cultural contact and education. The tours were organized by the Taiyo Athletic Club and Taiyo Girls Club, associations in Seattle that encouraged Japanese Americans to participate in sports. Issei (Japanese immigrants) expected to educate Nisei (second-generation Japanese Americans) about Japanese history and culture and promote positive relations between Japan and the United States. However, Nisei demonstrated their understanding of Japanese culture in their own way. This article indicates how the Nisei balanced Japanese and American cultures, relativizing each without showing significant bias toward either Japan or the United States. Their perspectives through cross-border movement reveal Nisei’s subjective manner of understanding Japan. | |||||||||
