We have examined the experiment of a rainbow that was performed by Descartes in the 17th century. Descartes irradiated a spherical glass filled with water with a sunbeam to observe the reflection and refraction of the light; the spherical glass was regarded as a drop of water. By comparing the course of the light and the result obtained by geometric consideration, Descartes concluded that a rainbow is the natural phenomena produced by the reflection and refraction of the light in a drop of water. |
