内容記述 | This paper is an attempt to examine and to refute the arguments presented by Murakami (1995) and Matsubara (1997) against postulating a Negation Phrase (NegP) headed by a functional category Neg for the analysis of English negative sentences. The postulation of the Neg projection in the clause structure has recently been proposed by a number of authors, such as Pollock (1989) and Belletti (1990) especially for some Romance languages, and Chomsky (1989/1991) for English among others. My previous paper, Iwamoto (1994), also endorsed the NegP analysis. On the other hand, both Murakami and Matsubara cast doubt on the NegP analysis and advocate the traditional IP analysis and propose what can be called 'an I-Negation analysis'; they are in accord in proposing that the negative formative not is adjoined to Infl in sentential negation. This paper shows that the main claims of Murakami and Matsubara that contrary to the predictions of the NegP analysis, Infl and Neg in English form a complex head and moreover, Neg and the following VP do not constitute a single constituent are in fact not well-founded either on the logical or empirical ground. It is also shown that the allegedly problematic data they adduce to support their I-Negation analysis can be fairly well dealt with in terms of the NegP analysis too. | |||||||||
