| 内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to interpret the elaborate numerology of Andrew Marvell's "The Garden", which to the best of my knowledge has never been examined. As Butler (1970) and Heninger (1974) pointed out, Marvell applied the principle of numerical proportion and mathematical harmony to poetical composition. Fowler (1970) discussed ''the numerology of the center" of' "An Horatian Ode" and "The First Anniversary". Røstvig (1977) referred to Marvell's use of the circular number 5 in the analysis of the circular structure of "Upon Appleton House". Ohki (1999) analyzed the intricate number symbolism in "Upon Appleton House". The first section considers the symbolism of the circles and the number 5, especially the human figure in the shape of pentagram that is the symbol of man as the microcosm corresponding the macrocosm. The second section analyzes the other symbolic numbers. The last section examines the correspondence of the number symbolism in "The Garden" and "Upon Appleton House". | |||||||||
