[Purpose] This study explored how the childcarers in Japanese nursery schools support parents and children who are from abroad and have long lived in Japan (hereinafter referred to as Newcomers) and discussed the current problems. [Results and Considerations] Interviews with eight childcarers about the support for Newcomers produced the following six categories: “to care for Newcomers when they enter nursery school," “to cooperate with Newcomer parents for their children's comfortable life," “to support Newcomer children's relationships with others," “to cope with Newcomer children's health and developmental problems," “to consider their home background," and “to guide them to enter primary school." Such support is the same as that for the Japanese parents and children, but the childcarers have actually encountered various problems due to the barriers of language and culture. A stronger relationship with Newcomer parents is required, and some systematic backup framework and cooperation with other organizations are also needed. |
